Building Java on Ubuntu is difficult because Ubuntu no longer ships the Sun/Oracle JVM (sun-java-6). Ubuntu 11.10 and later have OpenJDK 7, so we can use that. However, when you install it, some of OpenJDK 6 is also installed, which we do not support, so we have to work around this. A patch is coming.
