I actually find the group/directive lists useful.  Maybe not the columns but 
the popup widgets are a "lightweight" preview of what's inside the rule.

How about merging the widgets so you have one which displays short lists of 
both group and directive names (either side-by-side or in tabs, etc.) and just 
add a "View" button to the last column to show that widget?
